TerraPower Isotopes to Donate Actinium-225 via Oncidium Foundation to Support Cancer Treatment Accessibility

TerraPower Isotopes (TPI), a subsidiary of U.S. nuclear innovation company TerraPower, announced on July 29 that it will coordinate the donation of the rare medical isotope actinium-225 (Ac-225) through the Oncidium Foundation to support economically disadvantaged cancer patients in accessing targeted radionuclide therapy.

The Oncidium Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting global access to targeted radionuclide cancer treatments. Its RLT-Connect program aims to help financially challenged patients access relevant therapies, reducing treatment disparities caused by geographic and economic conditions. This donation also marks TPI's entry into Oncidium's collaborative ecosystem of radioisotope suppliers, medical practitioners, and radiopharmacies.

TerraPower Isotopes President Scott Claunch stated that the significance of expanding actinium-225 production lies in ensuring it reaches the patients who need it most. TPI has established stable logistics channels and maintains weekly shipments. Oncidium Foundation CEO Rebecca Lobue noted that access to radioligand therapy should not depend on where a patient lives, and TPI's donation of actinium-225 helps bridge this gap.

According to reports, TPI is advancing the supply of next-generation medical isotopes, having established a relatively stable actinium-225 supply chain and continuing to deliver to drug developers and researchers. The company stated that its actinium-225 is currently being used in global human clinical trials to support the development of targeted alpha therapy. Targeted alpha therapy is a precise cancer treatment method that combines a radioisotope with a targeting molecule to deliver localized radiation doses directly to cancer cells.

TPI also clarified that its produced actinium-225 is intended for use as a starting material in further manufacturing processes; as a starting material, its production does not comply with current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements.
