Korea Hosts McSEE Dose Assessment Program Application Workshop to Enhance Radiation Emergency Medical Capabilities

The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute announced that the National Radiation Emergency Medical Center recently held a workshop titled “Application Workshop on the Monte Carlo-Based Dose Assessment Program (McSEE)” in the disaster prevention education and training room. This event is part of the research project “Strengthening Emergency Care Capabilities for Radiation-Injured Patients,” aimed at promoting the application of new dose assessment technologies at radiation emergency sites and enhancing the practical skills of medical staff and researchers.

The workshop training was conducted by the research team of Professor Kim Chan-hyeong at Hanyang University. The team introduced the principles of Monte Carlo-based radiation dose assessment, the functions of the McSEE software and its application methods, and conducted case-based practical training around simulated radiation exposure accidents.

McSEE stands for “Monte Carlo Simulation Code for External Exposure,” which utilizes the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) standard human phantoms and computer simulation methods to calculate external exposure doses under different radiation exposure conditions. The program comprehensively considers factors such as radiation source, exposure location, distance, and time, helping to more accurately assess patient exposure levels and providing support for rapid medical decision-making in radiation emergencies.

The workshop content included an introduction to Monte Carlo dose assessment methods and the McSEE software, program installation and operation training, case-based exposure dose assessment practice, and on-site Q&A sessions. The training focused on simulated accident scenario applications, helping participants connect dose assessment results with patient triage and emergency treatment.

Cho Min-su, Director of the National Radiation Emergency Medical Center, stated that in radiation emergencies, rapidly and accurately assessing patient radiation exposure doses is key to determining appropriate treatment plans. The center will continue to introduce the latest dose assessment technologies and strengthen the national radiation emergency response capability through ongoing education and training.

According to reports, the National Radiation Emergency Medical Center is responsible for dose assessment and emergency medical treatment of patients exposed to radiation in radiation accidents, with its medical response system networked with radiation emergency medical institutions across Korea. In normal times, the center prepares for radiation emergency events by conducting dose assessment technology development and professional personnel training.
