U.S. Department of Energy Highlights Progress in Legacy Waste Cleanup and Medical Isotope R&D

Recently, senior officials from the U.S. Department of Energy attended an event hosted by the U.S. House Nuclear Cleanup Caucus, presenting the application progress of legacy nuclear waste cleanup efforts in medical isotope R&D and future energy technologies. The event, themed "DOE's Isotope Mission: Legacy Cleanup Saves Lives, Empowers America's Future," focused on how nuclear cleanup missions align with isotope production and medical research.

DOE's Under Secretary for Science Dario Gil, along with Oak Ridge National Laboratory Environmental Management Office Manager Eric Olds and Savannah River Operations Office Manager Edwin DeShon, jointly attended the event. DeShon introduced the Savannah River National Laboratory's work in cutting-edge isotope research, stating that the research aims to meet critical national needs.

Olds also serves as Acting Director of the Portsmouth-Paducah Project Office. During the event, he introduced Oak Ridge National Laboratory's "Cleanup to Cure" initiative. The program aims to extract the extremely rare medical isotope thorium-229 from uranium-233, followed by treatment and disposal of the associated materials. According to the presentation, thorium-229 is a key component of a potential cancer therapy currently undergoing clinical trials.

During the event, Gil also announced significant breakthroughs involving multiple laboratories in domestic stable isotope enrichment and production capabilities.

The event was co-hosted by the Energy Facilities Contractor Group, the Energy Technology and Environmental Business Association, and the Nuclear Energy Institute, attracting broad participation.
