Wiley Launches Spectroscopy Analysis API Portfolio in the U.S., Enabling Rapid Identification of Unknown Compounds
HOBOKEN, N.J. — Wiley recently announced the launch of its spectroscopy analysis Application Programming Interface (API) portfolio, opening its spectral data, analytical algorithms, and predictive models to laboratories, instrument vendors, and software platforms to help users identify and verify unknown compounds faster within their own workflows.

According to the company, Wiley has long been building scientific reference databases, with its spectral data applied across pharmaceuticals, forensics, environmental science, chemistry, food, and materials. The newly launched API portfolio aims to integrate these databases and analytical tools into more modern software environments, enabling laboratories to incorporate high-quality spectral information directly into existing systems, reducing manual operations, and improving analytical efficiency and result reliability.
As sample testing volumes increase, laboratory workflows are becoming more reliant on automation and software-driven processes. Wiley stated that the new products can be used in scenarios such as production line quality issue troubleshooting and on-site unknown compound identification, helping users shorten the time from sample analysis to result determination.
The API portfolio includes four core capabilities: a spectral database search API that queries Wiley's reference databases and assists in compound identification; a spectral structure verification API that confirms proposed chemical structures based on experimental spectral data; a compound classification API that categorizes unknown substances by compound class; and a spectral prediction API that generates predicted spectra for research, method development, and validation.
Spectral databases typically contain molecular "fingerprints" acquired through techniques such as infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Raman spectroscopy. Researchers can compare experimental spectra against validated reference data to identify unknown compounds across various application areas. Wiley stated that the API portfolio is continuously maintained and vendor-neutral, supporting multi-technique workflows, regulatory compliance requirements, and cross-platform interoperability.
