Four Units of Egypt's Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant Under Simultaneous Construction

Alexey Likhachev, President of Rosatom, and Mahmoud Esmat, Egypt's Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, recently discussed the construction progress of the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant. As Egypt's first nuclear power plant, the Dabaa project is planned to feature four VVER-1200 reactor units, which are expected to provide electricity for approximately 20 million people once completed.

Likhachev stated that the project has entered a critical construction phase, with all four units progressing simultaneously. Among them, Unit 1 serves as the pilot unit for the project and is scheduled to be connected to the grid in 2028. To achieve this goal, the project team still needs to complete several tasks, including the delivery of nuclear fuel in 2027.

Construction of Unit 2 is also continuing to advance. In July this year, the reactor pressure vessel for this unit was installed in its designated position, and preparatory work for power generation startup is currently underway.

At present, installation and civil construction work for Units 3 and 4 of the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant are being carried out simultaneously, including the construction of physical protection systems and onshore hydraulic structures. Approximately 25,000 workers are involved in construction at the project site.

Likhachev noted that in addition to the deep involvement of Egyptian enterprises in localized production, European companies are also participating in project supplies, with some goods coming from China. Currently, the supply of turbine hall equipment, electrical equipment, and control systems is generally on track, with both European and Asian suppliers delivering products as scheduled.

The Russian side will also train 1,700 operations and management personnel for the Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant to support the plant's operation after it is commissioned in the future.
