South Korea's POSCO Group Invests in Japanese Fusion Company Kyoto Fusion Engineering
South Korea's POSCO Group has invested in Japanese fusion energy company Kyoto Fusion Engineering (KF) to establish an early presence in the global fusion energy market and explore new business opportunities in future steel, specialty materials, and energy infrastructure.

According to industry sources on the 27th, POSCO Group participated in Kyoto Fusion Engineering's Series D funding round. The investment was made through the "Korea-Japan Fusion Fund," established by IMM Investment Japan (IMMJ) together with Korean and Japanese investors. POSCO Holdings and POSCO International also contributed to the fund to jointly participate in the investment in Kyoto Fusion Engineering, though the specific amount has not been disclosed.
Among South Korean steel, energy, heavy industry, and construction companies, POSCO Group, Doosan Group, and GS E&C have been listed as strategic investors in the Korea-Japan Fusion Fund. Industry observers believe that amid the continued surge in global fusion energy investment, POSCO Group's move is aimed at identifying industrial opportunities related to fusion commercialization at the group level.
With the expansion of AI applications and accelerated digital transformation, global electricity demand is growing rapidly, and the structure of the energy industry is also undergoing change. Major technology companies have increased their investment in future energy technologies, and competition for dominance over key technologies has intensified in parallel. If nuclear fusion energy achieves commercialization, it is expected to create new market opportunities in areas such as materials, equipment, engineering and construction, and energy supply.
For POSCO Group, the commercialization of fusion energy may align with its existing businesses. Fusion devices require steel and specialty materials capable of withstanding high temperatures, high radiation, and complex operating conditions, providing potential application scenarios for its materials R&D and product supply. In terms of infrastructure, the Group can also leverage its experience in large-scale nuclear power plant and energy infrastructure construction to assess the possibility of participating in future fusion power plant-related projects.
Industry sources noted that once nuclear fusion energy enters the commercialization stage, market opportunities will not be limited to power generation alone but will extend to supporting industries such as materials, equipment, and plant construction. For POSCO Group, tracking technological and market changes early and identifying pathways that align with its core capabilities in steel and specialty materials will carry practical significance.
Kyoto Fusion Engineering is a Japanese deep-tech company focused on developing core technologies required for fusion energy commercialization, including plasma heating, tritium fuel cycling, tritium breeding blankets, and heat exchange systems. The company plans to use the proceeds from this Series D round to advance the construction of demonstration infrastructure including UNITY-1, UNITY-2, and UNITY-3.
