Egyptian Minister of Electricity Inspects Small Modular Reactor Technology in Russia

On August 27, 2026, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud·Esmat visited a small nuclear reactor manufacturing and assembly plant operated by Rosatom during an official visit to Russia.

The inspection focused on the latest advancements in small modular reactor-related technologies, industrial application status, and potential cooperation opportunities between the two sides. The Egyptian side stated that such visits align with the country's direction of diversifying energy sources and enhancing the security and sustainability of electricity supply.

During the visit, Esmat was briefed on the manufacturing and assembly processes of small reactor components, as well as related safety systems, industrial manufacturing capabilities, and engineering capacities. The two sides also discussed technology transfer for small nuclear reactors, industrial localization, and enhancing the participation of Egyptian enterprises in the relevant supply chain.

The Egyptian side believes that these efforts contribute to improving localization levels and establishing a specialized national industrial base in the field of advanced nuclear technology. Esmat stated that small nuclear reactors possess strong flexibility and may expand into other application scenarios beyond power generation, representing a technology pathway with development potential. He also emphasized the need for a comprehensive assessment of this technology from technical, economic, industrial, and regulatory perspectives.
