Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant Named Industry Ecological Model Unit

Kalinin Nuclear Power Plant in Russia has been awarded first place in the 2025 annual ranking of "Ecological Model Units in the Nuclear Industry." A total of 75 enterprises under Rosatom submitted materials for this selection, with the review committee focusing on the comprehensive performance of participating units in ecological protection, environmental management, and information disclosure.

Kalinin NPP, affiliated with Rosenergoatom, Russia's nuclear power operator, is located in Udomlya, Tver Oblast. The review committee concluded that the plant has established a relatively complete work system in infrastructure modernization, environmental impact indicator control, aquatic biological resource protection, ecological science popularization, and information disclosure.

Data shows that the impact of production factors at Kalinin NPP on the surrounding environment remains at a low level, significantly below the limits set by environmental regulatory authorities. Technical measures mentioned during the review include upgrades to wastewater treatment facilities and measures to ensure the stable and efficient operation of supplementary water sources. These measures help maintain the ecological status of the two cooling lakes, Lake Pesvo and Lake Udomlya, in compliance with the requirements for the highest category of fishery water bodies.

Aquatic biological resource protection is one of the key priorities of the plant's environmental efforts. In 2025, Kalinin NPP conducted four artificial stocking and release activities in nearby waters, releasing a total of 164,000 juvenile fish weighing 2.098 tons. The plant also carried out the "No-Net Day" campaign together with representatives of fishery protection regulatory authorities to promote awareness of aquatic biological resource conservation and regulated angling.

Andrey Danilkin, head of the environmental protection department at Kalinin NPP, stated that the first-place recognition results from the sustained advancement of multiple initiatives, and that ecological safety relies on long-term measures including routine monitoring, equipment upgrades, environmental projects, ecological education, and aquatic biological resource protection.

In the area of ecological science popularization, Kalinin NPP employees participated in multiple career guidance and environmental awareness campaigns targeting youth and the general public, with the events reaching over 23,000 people. The plant also contributed to the production of educational videos for students in grades 6 through 11, which were broadcast on September 25, 2025, during vocational education classes in schools across Russia, reaching an audience of approximately 8.5 million students.

In 2025, Kalinin NPP also hosted two international delegations, with 45 media representatives from 8 countries visiting to learn about Russian nuclear energy technology and the plant's ecological projects. On Ecology Day, a cleanup campaign was organized in the water protection zone of the Udomlya Reservoir around the plant, combining ecological protection themes with local cultural and historical resources.

The environmental team at Kalinin NPP also won first place in the team category at the sixth professional skills competition "Best Specialists in Environmental Protection and Ecological Safety at Nuclear Power Plants." The plant operates four VVER-1000 pressurized water reactor units, each with an installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Its electricity generation accounts for approximately 82% of Tver Oblast's total output, 14% of the Central Federal District's generation, and about 15% of Rosenergoatom's total generation.

The award ceremony for the "Ecological Model Units in the Nuclear Industry" ranking is scheduled to be held in autumn 2026 during the dialogue events of the Ninth Nuclear Energy and Industrial Safety Industry Forum.
