Denmark's Region East Denmark to expand Sectra One imaging platform, unifying regional nuclear medicine and other medical imaging services

Swedish medical imaging IT and cybersecurity company Sectra has recently signed a contract to expand the application of its Sectra One enterprise imaging solution from hospitals in Denmark's Capital Region to the entire Region East Denmark. Region East Denmark was formed by merging the Capital Region and Region Zealand, and this expansion aims to promote unified operation of imaging services across hospitals in the entire region.

Under the contract, Sectra One will be delivered as a fully managed cloud service, covering all hospitals in Region East Denmark for the review and storage of radiology medical images, including breast imaging, nuclear medicine, and clinical physiology. Hospitals in Region Zealand will migrate to the system currently in use in the Capital Region, and the operation of existing systems will not be affected.

Once the unified imaging system is completed, hospitals across the region can share imaging resources and expertise. Clinicians will be able to access prior imaging data regardless of which hospital the patient previously underwent examinations at, helping cases be transferred more quickly to the appropriate specialists.

Currently, approximately 1,000 clinicians use the system simultaneously. With the connection of hospitals in Region Zealand, the number of simultaneous users is expected to increase to approximately 1,300. Region East Denmark estimates that more than 5,000 examinations are performed in the region each day.

Sune Henriksen, General Manager of Sectra Denmark, said that the solution was designed to support expansion, allowing new hospitals and specialties to be added without replacing the existing system. By having the entire region operate in the same system, hospitals can share imaging and expertise, and patients' prior images can also remain in the system for clinical use.

Sectra will provide the solution as a service through its private cloud and will be responsible for the related hardware, software, and other IT components. The company said this will allow regional IT teams to spend more time on core business such as optimizing workflows, rather than maintaining IT infrastructure.

This expansion is based on the agreement signed between Sectra and the Capital Region in 2022, and the scope of the agreement will be expanded to include hospitals joining from Region Zealand, with a term valid until 2037. The expansion agreement was signed in the second quarter of Sectra's 2026/2027 fiscal year.
