Bechtel and Westinghouse Consortium Formally Signs EPC Turnkey Contract for Poland's First Nuclear Power Plant, Construction Scheduled to Begin in 2027

A consortium comprising U.S. engineering giant Bechtel and nuclear technology supplier Westinghouse Electric Company has formally signed an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract with Poland's state-owned nuclear power company Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) to advance the construction of Poland's first-ever commercial nuclear power plant.

The nuclear project is located in Choczewo on the Baltic Sea coast in the Pomerania province of northern Poland. PEJ officially stated that the site is planned to host 3 Westinghouse AP1000 Generation III+ advanced pressurized water reactor units, with a designed total installed capacity of 3750 megawatts (3750 MWe), and the first unit is expected to be officially connected to the grid for power generation in 2036. The signing has established the core commercial terms framework of the EPC contract, paving the way for subsequent in-depth negotiations on specific commercial details and the final execution agreement.

Regarding on-site construction preparation, the Phase 2 pre-construction works of the project are currently being carried out in an orderly manner, mainly covering site leveling and earthwork backfilling, laying of underground comprehensive drainage networks, construction of temporary on-site and off-site access roads, and deep engineering geological surveys. PEJ submitted a formal construction permit application to Polish regulatory authorities in accordance with the law in March 2026, aiming to ensure that the project can achieve full-scale construction and concrete pouring as planned in 2027.
