Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe Submits Application for Pre-construction Permit for First Nuclear Power Plant
Recently, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) has formally submitted an application to the Governor of Pomorskie Voivodeship in northern Poland to obtain a construction permit for the pre-construction works of Poland's first nuclear power plant.

It is understood that this phase of works mainly involves site preparation and large-scale earthworks and rock excavation at the proposed site. Poland plans to build three AP1000 pressurized water reactor units designed by Westinghouse of the United States at this site. The pre-construction works cover major infrastructure construction, including the onshore section of the plant's cooling water channel, deep foundation pit excavation, pit wall reinforcement, and special protective measures to prevent groundwater infiltration.
Poland currently relies heavily on coal-fired power generation, and advancing the first nuclear power plant project is a core pillar of its efforts to achieve decarbonization targets and energy security. With the submission of the site preparation permit application, the project has formally moved from the preliminary planning and feasibility study stage to the on-site engineering implementation stage.
As a strategic project of Poland's national energy transition, the smooth advancement of the three AP1000 units will not only provide Poland with large-scale, stable, and reliable zero-carbon baseload electricity, but also serve as an important demonstration benchmark for reshaping the energy mix and integrating the nuclear supply chain in the Eastern European region.
