US Boston Dynamics and UK Roke Expand Spot Robot Reconnaissance Applications for Nuclear Facilities
US-based Boston Dynamics is expanding its collaboration with overseas specialized defense solutions companies to promote the application of its quadruped robot Spot in industrial, defense, and high-risk operational scenarios. Leveraging Spot's mature mobile platform capabilities, the company aims to further enter industry sectors with high demand for unmanned operations by integrating software systems designed for reconnaissance in hazardous environments.

UK defense security R&D company Roke announced on the 22nd that it has built an integrated solution using the Spot quadruped robot as the base hardware platform, integrated with the autonomous reconnaissance software SPROCKET. The solution adds multi-robot collaborative control, real-time 3D mapping, and multi-sensor operation capabilities to Spot, enabling it to perform specialized missions such as reconnaissance and detection.
The SPROCKET system can assign tasks to multiple robots at different locations and support synchronized operations. Relevant tasks include hazardous area scanning, target detection, sensor deployment, and surrounding environment mapping. Depending on operational requirements, additional sensors and functional modules can be added to the system, with applications covering high-risk locations where personnel entry poses significant danger, such as underground military facility reconnaissance and nuclear power plant decommissioning.
A recent demonstration video released by Roke shows that Spot robots equipped with the SPROCKET system can traverse almost completely dark underground tunnels and facility interiors while collecting spatial information. In environments where internal structures are difficult to discern with the naked eye, the system can process sensor data in real time to generate 3D maps of spatial elements such as walls and corridors.
During movement, Spot continuously records information about rooms, corridors, and pathways it has passed through and overlays this data onto the map. Even after the robot leaves the site, the collected spatial data can still be used for subsequent analysis, helping personnel identify internal structures and potential hazard factors without directly entering the site.
Founded in 1956, Roke focuses on defense, national security, and related industrial sectors, with technical expertise including electronic warfare, artificial intelligence, sensors, and cybersecurity. The company has also gained attention for its involvement in the early computer vision technology development of the sports analysis system "Hawk-Eye." Currently, Roke is developing specialized unmanned reconnaissance systems suitable for high-risk extreme environments such as battlefields and nuclear facilities, aiming to reduce the safety risks faced by personnel entering dangerous areas.
