Russia and Algeria Advance Cooperation in Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy

August 22 news, Russian Ambassador to Algeria Alexey Solomatin said in an interview that Russia and Algeria are advancing cooperation in the field of peaceful uses of nuclear energy, with direct working contacts established between the relevant agencies of the two countries.

Solomatin stated that cooperation between the two countries in this field is expanding. The basis for bilateral cooperation is the Intergovernmental Agreement on Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy signed in 2014. In addition, Russia and Algeria signed the Roadmap for Cooperation in the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy during the 2024 International Atomic Energy Expo (Atomexpo), outlining the main directions of bilateral cooperation.

He noted that the practical implementation of the agreements will begin in 2025. Among the areas, nuclear medicine is regarded as one of the most promising fields of cooperation. In September 2023, Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) and the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission (COMENA) signed a memorandum of cooperation in nuclear medicine, covering the development of nuclear medicine infrastructure, the introduction of modern diagnostic and therapeutic technologies, the production of radiopharmaceuticals, and the training of specialized personnel.

In October 2025, the Algerian Atomic Energy Commission and Russia's State Atomic Energy Corporation jointly held a seminar in Algiers on non-energy applications of nuclear energy, focusing on the use of nuclear technologies in healthcare, industry, agriculture, and seawater desalination. In November of the same year, the two sides held a second seminar dedicated to healthcare and nuclear medicine. At the meeting, the Russian side proposed plans for establishing nuclear medicine centers, producing radiopharmaceuticals, developing radiation therapy, and training specialized personnel.

Solomatin stated that the above activities demonstrate Algeria's desire to draw on Russia's experience in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. He believes that mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries in this field will continue to advance steadily.
