Angolan Public Health and Medical Training Delegation Visits the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, Focusing on Nuclear Medicine Diagnosis and Treatment Technologies

Recently, the "Angola Public Health and Medical Training Program," organized by the International Exchange Center of the Sichuan Provincial Health Commission, was held at the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University. An 18-member delegation comprising Angolan health administrators and medical personnel visited the hospital for exchange, with a focus on learning about the development and clinical application of nuclear medicine, urology, and other related disciplines.

Jiang Yong, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee, Vice President of Southwest Medical University, and President of the Affiliated Hospital, welcomed the Angolan delegation and introduced the hospital's basic information. He stated that under the guidance of the Sichuan Provincial Health Commission, the hospital will leverage its disciplinary advantages as a university-affiliated hospital and a Sichuan Provincial Medical Center to carry out practical cooperation with Angola in talent cultivation, technical exchange, and hospital management.

During the visit to the Department of Nuclear Medicine, Dr. Chen Huanyu introduced the delegation members to the department's development and clinical diagnosis and treatment practices. Considering that Angola currently has only one hospital with a nuclear medicine department, located in the capital, and that some delegation members have limited knowledge of this field, Chen Huanyu began with the basic principles of nuclear medicine, highlighting its role in precision diagnosis and treatment of tumors, including the combination of imaging diagnosis and internal radiation therapy to achieve "visualized diagnosis" and "precision strike" against tumors.

During the visit, the delegation also learned about the application of nuclear medicine technology in the treatment of patients with advanced tumors through departmental case studies. On that day, a 58-year-old patient with multiple bone metastases from prostate cancer was undergoing his sixth radionuclide therapy session. Through the exchange, the delegation learned that the patient had experienced significant pain and difficulty moving at the time of diagnosis. After receiving radionuclide therapy, his pain was alleviated, his condition improved during subsequent treatment, and his weight gradually recovered. This case gave the Angolan trainees a more intuitive understanding of the integrated diagnosis and treatment approach in nuclear medicine and precision targeted therapy for different cancer types.

Angolan representative Campos Bralúlio Edumildes de Oliveira stated that observing the shortened diagnosis and treatment cycles for patients at the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University reflects the advancement of tumor diagnosis and treatment technology. Angola's nuclear medicine sector is still in the development stage, and he expressed hope for continued deepening of exchanges and cooperation between both sides to serve more tumor patients.

After concluding the visit to the Department of Nuclear Medicine, the delegation proceeded to the Department of Urology. Jiang Rui, Director of the Department of Urology, introduced the department's basic profile and disciplinary features, expressing willingness to establish long-term connections with Angolan counterparts through Yang Haifan, who is about to undertake an overseas medical assistance mission in Angola, and to cooperate in areas such as clinical skill improvement, talent cultivation, and consultation on complex cases.

Yang Haifan, who is about to lead the 6th batch of the overseas medical assistance team to Angola as team leader, also communicated with the delegation members to understand the current status and practical needs of urology development in Angola. He stated that he would ensure effective coordination and implementation during the overseas mission to promote tangible results in departmental cooperation between both sides. The Angolan trainees expressed welcome and anticipation for the relevant cooperation.
