China's largest single-building oncology nuclear medicine center to be completed and put into operation in Luzhou, Sichuan

On September 2, the "Myriad Weather in Sichuan · Starting Strong for the '15th Five-Year Plan'" Luzhou special press conference was held in Chengdu. The conference disclosed that China's largest single-building oncology nuclear medicine center is about to be completed and put into operation in Luzhou, Sichuan.

The center is the Oncology Nuclear Medicine Center of the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, a key project of Sichuan Province's regional medical centers. The project has a total investment of 310 million yuan, covers an area of approximately 15,000 square meters, and plans more than 160 beds. It will integrate functions including nuclear medicine molecular imaging, nuclear drug R&D and preparation, radionuclide therapy, tumor radiotherapy, and specialized oncology diagnosis and treatment, and will be built into a large-scale specialized oncology nuclear medicine diagnosis and treatment platform integrating clinical services, R&D, and translation.

After the project is completed, tumor patients in the region are expected to receive higher-level radionuclide diagnosis and treatment services locally, reducing the need for long-distance travel for medical care and improving diagnosis and treatment efficiency and patient experience.

According to the project manager, the overall construction progress is advancing steadily, with 90% of the total work completed. Finishing work including outdoor landscape greening, installation of terminal equipment inside the building, basement electromechanical installation, and decoration is currently underway, with full completion expected by mid-October.

Luzhou has already established a foundation in the nuclear medicine field. Relying on the Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Affiliated Hospital of Southwest Medical University, the city has accumulated clinical application scenarios, diagnostic and treatment data, and a medical team with an annual patient volume of 16,000. In April this year, the Zhongshan Laboratory was inaugurated in Luzhou, led by two academicians and bringing together more than 40 nuclear medicine experts from home and abroad to conduct research on key core technologies such as integrated targeted diagnosis and treatment nuclear drugs, promoting the connection between research and clinical practice as well as the translation of achievements.

With the commissioning of the Oncology Nuclear Medicine Center and the qualification of Yunlong Airport for nuclear drug transportation, Luzhou is promoting the formation of an industrial chain of "isotopes—nuclear drugs—medical equipment—clinical practice—pharmaceutical logistics," and will make clinical translation and application an important direction for the development of the nuclear medicine industry.
