Fermi America's Project Matador Receives NRC Draft Environmental Assessment, Plans Four AP1000 Reactors to Power AI
Recently, Fermi America's advanced energy and intelligence campus, "Project Matador," located in Carson County, Texas, has made significant progress. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has published a Federal Register notice releasing the draft environmental assessment for the four Westinghouse AP1000 reactors planned for the campus. NRC staff have preliminarily recommended approval of the project's combined license, subject to completion of the necessary safety review.

It is understood that "Project Matador" plans 17 gigawatts of private energy infrastructure, with nuclear power generation as a key component, aimed at powering next-generation artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. In addition to nuclear energy, the hub also combines natural gas, solar power, and battery energy storage technologies to provide round-the-clock, 24-hour uninterrupted power supply. Federal reviews can typically take years, but Fermi America received the notice just 15 months after submitting its application.
Final approval still requires completion of the final environmental assessment, final safety assessment, and a final Commission vote. The current preliminary recommendation represents continued progress toward the project's long-term nuclear energy goals. Fermi America expressed gratitude to the NRC review team and specifically acknowledged partners including Westinghouse, Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Preferred Licensing Services, and ENERCON. The company's internal nuclear development team, led by Mesut Uzman and including Sezin Uzman, Andrew Bryant, and Danny Weaver, was praised for advancing the project to its current stage.
