Chinese Team Wins One Gold and Three Silver Medals in First Participation at International Nuclear Science Olympiad

The 2026 International Nuclear Science Olympiad concluded on the evening of the 8th in Jeddah, a city in western Saudi Arabia. The Chinese team, participating for the first time, had four contestants win one gold and three silver medals, with overall results ranking among the top participating countries.

The International Nuclear Science Olympiad, supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency, is the world's first international youth Olympiad themed on nuclear science. It aims to stimulate young people's interest in nuclear science, promote international youth exchange, and guide more young people into the fields of nuclear science and nuclear technology. The event was inaugurated in 2024, and this year's competition is the third edition, with teams from 19 countries participating. The eight-day event featured theoretical and practical examinations covering multiple directions in nuclear science.

The Chinese team consisted of four students, all of whom achieved outstanding results. Contestant Liu Siqi from Beijing No. 80 Middle School (Wangjing Campus) won a gold medal, while Wang Yuanfu from Beijing National Day School, Sun Rongze from Beijing No. 8 Middle School, and Zhang Yuxuan from Beijing 101 Middle School won silver medals.

Talal Al-Rashidi, a representative of the event's organizing committee, stated that the Chinese team is welcome to participate in the International Nuclear Science Olympiad for the first time. The Chinese contestants performed excellently, fully demonstrating the positive spirit of Chinese youth, and he expressed confidence that the Chinese team will deliver even more impressive performances in future editions of this event.

Liu Siqi said: "Through this competition, exchanging and learning alongside outstanding young people from around the world, I have become even more determined in my conviction to study hard and scale the heights of science."

Wang Peng, leader of the Chinese team, Deputy Chief Economist of the CNNC Strategy and Planning Research Institute, and President of China Atomic Energy Press, said: "In the future, we will continue to strengthen the popularization of nuclear science knowledge and guide more outstanding young people to understand, embrace, and engage with nuclear science."
