Vietnam's Petrovietnam and Korea Electric Power Corporation Advance Cooperation on Ninh Thuan 2 Nuclear Power Project

On September 8, a delegation led by Petrovietnam General Director Le Manh Cuong held a working meeting in Seoul, South Korea with a delegation led by KEPCO Chairman and CEO Kim Dong-cheol, with both sides focusing on the implementation of the cooperation agreement in the nuclear power sector.
Le Manh Cuong stated that Vietnam is taking measures to create conditions for the implementation of nuclear power projects. Previously, Petrovietnam and KEPCO signed a cooperation agreement witnessed by high-level leaders of both countries, demonstrating that nuclear power has become one of the promising areas of Vietnam-Korea cooperation.
Regarding the Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power project, Petrovietnam has been designated as the investor, and the local government is advancing site preparation work. Information disclosed at the meeting showed that approximately 97.5% of the land for the project has been cleared, with the remaining work expected to be completed soon. This is considered an important condition for advancing the project to its next phase.
Le Manh Cuong emphasized that the Vietnamese government is determined to advance nuclear power projects, and Petrovietnam hopes to work with potential partners to develop effective, feasible cooperation plans with conditions conducive to rapid implementation, for submission to the two governments for consideration.
Kim Dong-cheol stated that through this exchange, KEPCO has gained a clearer understanding of the direction and preparation status of Vietnam's Ninh Thuan 2 nuclear power project. KEPCO hopes to cooperate with Petrovietnam to study effective implementation plans for the nuclear power project and share its experience from participating in the Barakah nuclear power plant project in the United Arab Emirates. KEPCO believes that long-term cooperation, trust between partners, and organizational execution capability play important roles in the successful implementation of large-scale nuclear power projects.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Petrovietnam and KEPCO agreed to continue strengthening communication, conducting coordinated research on technical, investment, and financing solutions, while promoting support from relevant agencies of both countries. Both sides believe that Vietnam's determination to advance the project, combined with KEPCO's experience and capabilities in the nuclear power sector, will lay the foundation for Vietnam-Korea energy cooperation to enter a new phase and contribute to the achievement of Vietnam's energy security and sustainable development goals.
