Germany will provide an additional 1 million euros to help address nuclear safety issues at the Zaporizhzhia NPP

Recently, according to the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, the German government will provide an additional 1 million euros in aid to improve the safety level of Ukrainian nuclear power plants.

Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter, Parliamentary State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, is expected to formally announce this additional 1 million euros in funding on Tuesday at a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna.

Previously, Germany had cumulatively provided 7.3 million euros in financial support to the IAEA's nuclear safety and security work in Ukraine.

Since the outbreak of the conflict, nuclear safety issues at Europe's largest nuclear power plant——the Zaporizhzhia NPP, currently under Russian control——have attracted great attention from the international community. The nuclear power plant has repeatedly come under drone attacks and suffered external power supply interruptions, forcing it to frequently rely on emergency diesel generators to maintain the operation of its cooling system.

In addition, Parliamentary State Secretary Schwarzelühr-Sutter is also expected to call on the international community to increase support to advance the repair work of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant shelter——the protective structure was damaged in early 2025. German Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider previously announced that Germany plans to allocate 50 million euros for this repair project.
