DARPA Ships Insect Sterility Technique Irradiator to the United States with Panamanian Cooperation
An insect irradiator used for the sterile insect technique program was recently transshipped to the United States via Panama, where it will support U.S. efforts to address the New World screwworm threat. The equipment was acquired by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) on July 8, 2026, and arrived in Panama, where it was subsequently transferred from the port to the airport with the assistance of Panamanian partners. The New World screwworm is a parasitic pest whose flies lay eggs in warm-blooded animals, with larvae burrowing into tissue and feeding, posing a threat to livestock production. Jon O’Rullian, president of the equipment manufacturer Foss Therapy Services, Incorporated, stated that threats of this kind are significant to all types of livestock producers.

SHINE Advances Commercial Spent Fuel Recycling Facility Construction
U.S. electricity demand is growing at a rate rarely seen in decades, and nuclear energy is considered one of the key options to meet the incremental demand. Meanwhile, the current open nuclear fuel cycle still treats spent fuel primarily as single-use waste, failing to fully utilize most of the energy potential that remains within it. SHINE Technologies is developing spent fuel recycling technologies and plans to build a facility with spent fuel recycling capabilities. The company stated that multiple collaborations funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) CURIE program are advancing the work from validated laboratory-scale chemical processes toward commercial scale...

India's cumulative nuclear power generation surpasses 1 trillion units (1000 BU), NPCIL sets historic milestone
Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) announced on August 4 that cumulative nuclear power generation since the start of commercial operations has exceeded 100 billion kilowatt-hours (1000 Billion Units, equivalent to 1 trillion kWh) for the first time. The company stated that this milestone marks a significant achievement on India's path toward clean and sustainable energy, corresponding to avoiding approximately 860 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions—equivalent to approximately taking 187 million gasoline and diesel passenger vehicles off the road for a full year, or nearly the total annual greenhouse gas emissions of a single industrialized nation such as Germany or Japan. NPCIL data shows that electricity generated through nuclear power has effectively avoided substantial greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear energy is recognized as one of the low-carbon and reliable energy sources, playing a critical role in addressing climate change...

Guangzhou Taihe Proton Therapy Center Surpasses 1,000 Patients Treated
Since the ProBeam proton radiotherapy system at the Proton Therapy Center of Guangzhou Taihe Cancer Hospital was officially put into clinical use in December 2024, the center has provided proton radiotherapy services to more than 1,000 patients within 19 months, with consecutive single-day treatment volumes exceeding 100 patient sessions. According to information released by the hospital, compared with the time taken by some internationally comparable proton centers to complete 1,000 clinical cases, Guangzhou Taihe took 19 months. Relevant comparisons include: Emory Proton Therapy Center in the United States took 2 years to complete 1,000 cases after launching in December 2018; MIBS Proton Therapy Center in Russia took approximately 2 years after trial operation began in September 2017; University College London Hospitals Proton Centre in the United Kingdom took nearly 4 years after launching in December 2021; Tata Memorial Centre in Mumbai, India, took nearly 3 years after launching in 2023; and the Proton Centre at the National Cancer Centre Singapore took 26 months to complete 500 cases after launching in June 2023.
