South Korea launches next-generation nuclear energy research talent training program

South Korea's talent training program for postdoctoral researchers in the nuclear energy field has officially been launched, which will be based on university laboratories to promote future nuclear technology research, industry-academia-research cooperation, and employment linkage.

On August 25, during the "2026 Climate and Energy Job Fair," the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning (KETEP), and the Korea Radiation Promotion Association held the unveiling ceremony for the "Next-Generation Energy Leader Training Program in the Nuclear Energy Field," announcing the full commencement of related work.

The project is supported by the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment and the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning, and is implemented by the Korea Radiation Promotion Association. The program primarily targets postdoctoral researchers, with the goal of enhancing research capabilities while promoting the transfer of research outcomes accumulated at universities into industrial application scenarios.

According to the plan, the project is not limited to research funding support; it will also integrate joint research, technology exchange, industry-demand-oriented capacity building, and employment support into a single system, forming a full-cycle training mechanism covering research, industrial cooperation, and career development.

South Korea believes that the technological scope of the nuclear energy industry is expanding from traditional large-scale nuclear power plants to innovative small modular reactors (i-SMR), nuclear safety, spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste management, nuclear facility decommissioning, and nuclear fusion, with continuously rising demand for high-level research talent.

Currently, 17 laboratories from 10 universities across South Korea are participating in the project, including Kyung Hee University, Dongguk University WISE Campus, Seoul National University, Sejong University, Yonsei University Mirae Campus, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology, Jeju National University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Hanyang University.

Participating laboratories will conduct joint research with postdoctoral researchers, covering future technology areas such as small modular reactors, nuclear safety, nuclear fuel, radiation applications, and nuclear fusion. The project also requires research work to be aligned with the actual technological needs of industry to enhance the likelihood of technology transfer and collaborative application.

The Korea Radiation Promotion Association plans to advance future technology R&D, industry-academia-research cooperation projects, technology exchange, industry-demand-oriented training, expert seminars, professional mentoring, and employment support for participating laboratories and postdoctoral researchers in a phased manner.

The talent training program will also incorporate artificial intelligence application capability training. Park Jeong-ki, Executive Vice President of the Korea Radiation Promotion Association, stated that with the development of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, the nuclear energy R&D environment is rapidly changing, and the association will support postdoctoral researchers in growing into core research talent equipped with both professional research capabilities and AI application skills.

The subsequent effectiveness of the project will depend on whether research outcomes from university laboratories can be further transformed into industrial cooperation, technology transfer, and employment opportunities. South Korea hopes to enhance the technological competitiveness of the nuclear energy industry and establish a high-level talent cultivation ecosystem that connects university laboratories to the industrial frontline.
