TU Delft participates in innovative projects on compact reactors and molten salt reactors

TU Delft participates in innovative projects on compact reactors and molten salt reactors

The MOOI Kernenergie nuclear funding programme, operated by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO), has recently selected four innovative projects to support research and development in reactor and fuel cycle technologies, radioactive waste storage, and geological disposal solutions. TU Delft is involved in three of these projects, with researchers from its Reactor Institute participating in the MARLIN and PRONTO projects. The MARLIN project focuses on compact modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGRs) for industrial, maritime, and offshore applications. Based on measurement data and models, the project consortium will develop and validate a reactor prototype capable of simultaneously providing electricity and high-temperature process heat, with a focus on industrial clusters as well as maritime and offshore scenarios.

U.S. Apollo Atomics Secures $31 Million in Funding to Advance Commercialization of Compact Pressurized Water Reactor

U.S. Apollo Atomics Secures $31 Million in Funding to Advance Commercialization of Compact Pressurized Water Reactor

U.S.-based Apollo Atomics recently announced the completion of a $31 million seed funding round to advance the commercialization of its next-generation compact pressurized water reactor. Incubated by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and backed by Y Combinator, the company plans to shift the reactor from the traditional one-off large-scale construction model to a factory-manufactured, scalable product. The round was led by FCVC, with participation from Y Combinator, Telesoft Partners, Alumni Ventures, Robinhood Ventures, Nucleation Capital, Pelion VC, and Duke Capital Partners. The company stated that the proceeds will be used to...

German research team achieves ultra-compact plasma photocathode injection

German research team achieves ultra-compact plasma photocathode injection

A research team from institutions including the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf in Germany has demonstrated an ultra-compact plasma photocathode injection scheme integrated into a hybrid plasma wakefield accelerator on the DRACO laser facility. The study utilized a 150 TW-class laser system to drive a laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA), generating high-peak-current electron beams, which in turn drove a subsequent particle beam wakefield accelerator (PWFA), completing the generation and acceleration of witness electron beams within millimeter-scale plasma structures. Plasma wakefield accelerators can produce accelerating fields far exceeding those of conventional radiofrequency linear accelerators, but how to obtain high-quality, high-brightness electron beams in compact devices...

Russian Team Proposes Compact "Siberian Snake" Design for NICA Collider to Control Proton Polarization

Russian Team Proposes Compact "Siberian Snake" Design for NICA Collider to Control Proton Polarization

Experts from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research have proposed a compact Siberian snake magnetic field device design for Russia's NICA collider. The device employs a transverse magnetic field, aiming to maintain proton spin direction during acceleration to a maximum of 13.5 GeV and control polarization orientation during experiments. Related numerical simulations of proton polarization show that this design can effectively suppress beam depolarization. Russia's NICA accelerator complex — Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology press office In an accelerator, proton beams travel along a closed orbit, and particle spins precess around a specific rotation axis. When the beam reaches certain energies, spin may resonate with periodic perturbations in the ring structure, causing beam depolarization; without dedicated control measures, the beam polarization state required for experiments would be difficult to maintain.

Key Breakthroughs Achieved in Development of Core Equipment for BEST Compact Fusion Energy Test Facility

Key Breakthroughs Achieved in Development of Core Equipment for BEST Compact Fusion Energy Test Facility

Recently, at a critical juncture in the all-out sprint toward the "double-half" goals, the development of two core components of the compact fusion energy test facility (BEST) main machine equipment—the vacuum vessel and the mid-plane thermal shield—undertaken by Shanghai Electric Nuclear Power Group and manufactured by No.1 Machine Tool Plant, has achieved successive milestone results. Multiple key manufacturing tasks have been successfully completed and delivered upon acceptance, marking that the development of BEST main machine core equipment has fully entered the critical stage of tackling difficulties and accelerating the sprint, laying a solid foundation for high-quality project delivery. As the core key equipment of the compact fusion energy test facility, the BEST vacuum vessel and mid-plane thermal shield feature complex structures, extremely high precision requirements, and difficult manufacturing processes...

Hefei Compact Fusion Energy Experimental Device Accelerates Construction

Hefei Compact Fusion Energy Experimental Device Accelerates Construction

On July 27, the Compact Fusion Energy Experimental Device (BEST), located in Sanshigang Township, Luyang District, Hefei City, Anhui Province, is accelerating its construction. From aerial footage, the construction at the project site is progressing in an orderly manner, with related work continuing to unfold. The BEST device is a follow-up project to the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) and will conduct further experimental validation based on the first-generation EAST device. As a key experimental platform for future fusion energy applications, BEST is expected to become the world's first compact fusion energy experimental device, providing support for the transition of fusion energy from scientific experiments to engineering applications. ...
