Carbon isotope analysis reveals: Canadian Arctic seabed sediments can sequester part of permafrost organic carbon

Carbon isotope analysis reveals: Canadian Arctic seabed sediments can sequester part of permafrost organic carbon

News dated August 3, 2026: Researchers from the Alfred Wegener Institute and the Center for Marine Environmental Sciences at the University of Bremen conducted a study on permafrost coasts near Herschel Island (Qikiqtaruk) in Canada, finding that not all terrestrial organic carbon released by Arctic permafrost thaw and coastal erosion enters the atmosphere—a significant portion is instead stored in seabed sediments. The findings have been published in the journal *Nature Geoscience*. Arctic terrestrial permafrost ecosystems store approximately 130 billion tons of carbon from organic sources such as plant debris, while marine and river delta sediments contain an additional 40 billion tons. As Arctic warming accelerates...

Lead isotope analysis of Roman sling bullets points to two supply routes in the Alpine conquest campaign

Lead isotope analysis of Roman sling bullets points to two supply routes in the Alpine conquest campaign

A lead isotope study of Roman lead sling bullets suggests that the Roman army's conquest of the Alps under Augustus may not have proceeded along a single continuous route, but rather involved different units or different supply systems. The objects studied come mainly from the Crap Ses site in the Surseiva valley of the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, as well as from Brigantium and Tasgetium near Lake Constance further north. Over the past 25 years, archaeologists have discovered marching camps, battlefields, observation posts, small fort remains, as well as swords, shields, hobnails, coins, and nearly 500 lead sling bullets near Crap Ses. Many of these bullets bear inscriptions of the Third Legion...

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Advances New Nuclear Power Planning at Nanticoke Site, Allocates CAD 500,000 for Local Consultation

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Advances New Nuclear Power Planning at Nanticoke Site, Allocates CAD 500,000 for Local Consultation

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is planning new energy facilities at the site of the former coal-fired plant in Nanticoke, allocating CAD 500,000 for communication and planning with Haldimand County. The 900-acre site is being evaluated for future power generation possibilities, including small modular reactors (SMRs) or a standard nuclear power plant. This move aligns with Ontario's generational energy plan, aimed at meeting electricity demand projected to grow by 90% by 2050. The Nanticoke Generating Station was once the largest coal-fired power plant in North America, operating from 1972 to 2013 and safely decommissioned in 2019. OPG President and CEO Nicolle Butcher stated that the company understands the...

Czech Republic Leads EU Project to Assess Application of Commercial-Grade Items in VVER Nuclear Power Plants

Czech Republic Leads EU Project to Assess Application of Commercial-Grade Items in VVER Nuclear Power Plants

The Czech State Office for Nuclear Safety (SÚJB) has launched a two-year EU project focused on assessment methodologies for the application of high-quality commercial-grade items in nuclear power plants equipped with VVER reactors. The project aims to establish a unified, expert-judgment-based evaluation process that provides methodological support for nuclear facilities when introducing relevant items, while ensuring that nuclear safety requirements are not compromised. As the nuclear power supply chain landscape evolves, certain plant-specific components may face the need to be replaced by commercial-grade products. In response, regulatory authorities need to establish clear rules to review the suitability, quality assurance, and safety implications of substitute items. The project will focus on evaluating...

New Progress in Ion Dynamics Regulation in Nanofluidic Memristors by the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

Water-based nanofluidic ionic devices offer unique advantages in frontier fields such as brain-computer interfaces and biocompatible computing. Recently, the research team from the State Key Laboratory of Heavy Ion Science and Technology at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Lanzhou University, Hebei University of Geosciences, and other partners, successfully achieved stable ionic memristive effects in single-ion-track nanochannels. Through precise regulation, they realized programmable transitions between memristive and synaptic functions, providing a new technological pathway for the development of next-generation low-power neuromorphic computing hardware. The related results were published in the journal *Small* on July 22. Relying on the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL), the researchers...

Researchers at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, reveal the dual-directional role of shell effects in multinucleon transfer reactions

Researchers at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, reveal the dual-directional role of shell effects in multinucleon transfer reactions

Recently, the research team from the State Key Laboratory of Heavy Ion Science and Technology at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with collaborators, revealed the dual-directional mechanism of shell effects in multinucleon transfer reactions and proposed optimized reaction systems. This study provides new insights for the efficient synthesis of neutron-rich nuclides in the laboratory. The results were published in Physics Letters B. The synthesis and study of neutron-rich nuclides near the neutron magic number 126 are of special scientific significance, as the properties of these nuclides are directly related to how heavy elements such as gold and platinum in the universe are formed. However, efficiently producing these nuclides has long been an experimental challenge. Traditional fusion-evaporation...

GAO Report Urges DOE-EM to Learn from Canada, UK, France, and Belgium in Reshaping Nuclear Waste Cleanup Strategy

GAO Report Urges DOE-EM to Learn from Canada, UK, France, and Belgium in Reshaping Nuclear Waste Cleanup Strategy

The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) noted in a new report that countries such as Canada, France, and the United Kingdom have taken proactive measures in recent years to accelerate nuclear waste cleanup. The report recommends that the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Environmental Management (DOE-EM) engage in strategic exchanges with these countries to identify and evaluate alternative approaches that could reduce risks, lower costs, or expedite cleanup activities. Currently, DOE-EM estimates its cleanup mission could cost between $641 billion and $840 billion and may not be completed until 2100. The report found that while DOE-EM has some level of exchange with other countries on nuclear cleanup, such exchanges are not strategic and lack proactive learning...

Germany Achieves First Capture of Argon Nuclei at 30% Speed of Light with Electron Cooling

Germany Achieves First Capture of Argon Nuclei at 30% Speed of Light with Electron Cooling

On August 3, researchers at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Germany successfully decelerated and captured fully ionized argon ions (^36Ar^18+) for the first time using the HITRAP highly charged ion trap facility. These ions, having lost all their electron shells, can be regarded as bare nuclei, with an initial velocity of approximately 30% of the speed of light. The research findings have been published in the journal Physical Review X. The interior of the radiofrequency resonator that slows down the ions is where highly charged ions are typically produced via particle accelerators and formed under strong electric fields and high-energy conditions. Since these ions are generated at extremely high velocities, they must first be stopped, captured, and cooled before precision physics measurements can be conducted. The research team stated that this experiment achieved, for the first time, the entire process from producing highly charged ions to storing them in a special trap for at least 11 seconds.
