Fourteen academic societies in South Korea call for protection of KRR-1 research reactor auxiliary buildings
On September 1, fourteen academic societies and associations, including the Korean Nuclear Society, issued a statement welcoming the temporary registration of the reactor hall and auxiliary buildings of Research Reactor Unit 1 (KRR-1, TRIGA Mark-II) in Gongneung-dong, Nowon-gu, Seoul, as nationally registered cultural heritage, and urged Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the owner of the site and buildings, to promptly submit a formal registration application. Guohe Series Nuclear Power Engineering Modular Quarterly Meeting and Construction Technology Innovation Application Exchange Conference Successfully Held in Qidong
On August 21, the Guohe Series Nuclear Power Engineering Modular Quarterly Meeting and Construction Technology Innovation Application Exchange Conference, hosted by Shanghai Nuclear Engineering Research and Design Institute (SNERDI) and organized by China Nuclear Industry Fifth Construction Co., Ltd. (CNF), was successfully held in Qidong, Jiangsu Province. Zhang Shoulong, Deputy General Manager and Safety Director of SNERDI, Li Jun, Deputy General Manager of China Nuclear Engineering Corporation (CNEC), and Liu Weihua, Chief Engineer of CNF, attended the meeting. More than 50 representatives from various nuclear power construction participating units gathered to discuss the innovation and practical application of nuclear power modular construction technology. At the meeting, the implementation of action items from the previous quarter was first reviewed, followed by progress reports on key work items including dry construction, plugging modularization, module design guidance manual, and multi-discipline shared rack design optimization. Each nuclear power project department then reported on quarterly work progress and subsequent work plans in turn; participating construction units including China Nuclear Industry 22nd Construction Co., Ltd., China Nuclear Industry 23rd Construction Co., Ltd., and CNF conducted thematic exchanges on modular construction, automatic welding technology, implementation of innovative technologies, and the "7050" plan (70% of all plant welding joints as prefabricated joints, and 50% of all plant prefabricated joints welded by automatic welding). Departments of SNERDI and participating partner units conducted in-depth discussions, exchanging views on key challenges in nuclear power modular construction and building consensus on technical breakthroughs. During the meeting, all attending representatives visited the Jiangsu Heneng Qidong Intelligent Manufacturing Base for on-site inspection, observing the intelligent manufacturing production line construction and gaining direct insight into the practical achievements of modular prefabrication and intelligent manufacturing processes. The meeting fully affirmed the phased achievements made by all participating units in the field of Guohe series nuclear power modular construction, pointed out that modular construction is a key driver for improving quality and efficiency in nuclear power engineering, and made arrangements for the next phase of work, emphasizing that all participating units should continue to deepen EC (Engineering-Construction) collaboration and integrated construction-installation development, and strengthen collaborative coordination to fully guarantee the high-quality construction of Guohe series nuclear power projects.

Shimane Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 restarted and reached criticality
Chugoku Electric Power Co. announced on August 13 that it started up the reactor of Unit 2 at the Shimane Nuclear Power Station at 10:00 that day, and the unit reached a critical state at 12:14. Unit 2 of the Shimane Nuclear Power Station is a boiling water reactor with a rated electrical output of 820,000 kilowatts. Criticality refers to the state in which nuclear fission reactions in the reactor core can be sustained, and is one of the key milestones in the unit restart process. According to the plan, the unit will resume power generation, i.e., synchronize the generator to the grid, on August 18, 2026, and is expected to resume commercial operation on September 16, 2026. Small Modular Reactors Expected to Contribute One-Quarter of Global New Nuclear Capacity by 2050
According to data compiled by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), global nuclear power installed capacity is expected to reach 1,446 GWe by 2050. This projection is based on the continued operation of existing reactors and the implementation of announced nuclear power development targets by governments. Currently, global installed nuclear capacity stands at approximately 403 GWe. To achieve the above scale, an additional approximately 1,043 GWe of nuclear capacity will need to be added. Among this, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are expected to contribute about 260 GWe, accounting for roughly one-quarter of global new nuclear capacity. Factors driving nuclear power expansion are increasing. The rapid adoption of artificial intelligence applications has driven up electricity demand from data centers, and the accelerating electrification of transportation and industrial sectors has further elevated the importance of stable, low-carbon electricity supply. Meanwhile, energy security and net-zero emission targets are prompting more countries to reassess the role of nuclear energy in their energy mix.

Heavy water leak at Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 in South Korea found to be far larger than initially reported
The actual scale of the heavy water leak that occurred at Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant Unit 2 in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, in September last year, is reported to be far larger than the initially disclosed figure.
