Russian Nuclear-Powered Icebreaker "Yakutia" Provides First Escort for Luxury Cruise Ship to Wrangel Island Nature Reserve
This summer, the second group of tourists to Wrangel Island successfully landed on the nature reserve. 150 tourists were able to witness with their own eyes this mysterious island known as the "birthplace of polar bears." This was made possible thanks to the nuclear-powered icebreaker Yakutia providing ice escort services for the luxury cruise ship SH Minerva, ensuring navigational safety. This year, ice conditions in the Chukotka region were relatively complex, posing challenges to the cruise ship's operations. Previously, SH Minerva had failed to reach Wrangel Island due to its inability to break through sea ice, so the trip organizers took special measures this time. RussiaDiscovery and Vodokhod companies submitted a request to Rosatomflot...

Russian Researchers Develop High-Wear-Resistant Steel Sample for Nuclear Waste Processing
Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) recently announced that Russian researchers have developed a steel sample with reinforcing elements. Experimental results show that the durability of this material is approximately 4 times that of 5KhNM tool steel currently used in nuclear power plant waste processing equipment. The research focuses on improving precipitation hardening steel structures. Precipitation hardening steel is a special class of alloy material that, after quenching and holding at specific temperatures, precipitates fine, hard particles within the steel, thereby enhancing strength and wear resistance. The researchers aim to replace existing 5KhNM tool steel with new high-strength alloys...

Four new units at India's Kudankulam nuclear power plant delayed by three years, cost overrun of 55% to $14.4 billion
The construction cost of four new units at the Kudankulam nuclear power plant being built by Russia's Rosatom in India has increased by 55% since 2024 due to delays. Each unit has a capacity of 1 gigawatt, and the updated total construction cost has reached 1.38 trillion Indian rupees (approximately $14.4 billion). Among them, the construction cost of Units 3 and 4 has increased by 73%, while the cost of Units 5 and 6 has risen by 40%. Russia had previously provided India with $4.2 billion in state credit for the construction of Units 3 and 4. Indian officials stated that the reasons for the delays include the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, difficulties in the supply of specific materials and equipment, and problems faced by contractors. Despite...

Russia Suspends Payments to Nuclear Agency, Redirects Funds to Rosatom
The Russian government has decided to continue suspending membership fee payments to the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) under the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), redirecting the funds to Rosatom, Russia's state atomic energy corporation. According to the latest resolution, approximately 61.3 million rubles (equivalent to nearly $773,500) originally allocated for the 2026 NEA membership fees will be reallocated to Rosatom. This marks the second consecutive year Russia has failed to fulfill its financial obligations to the agency. As early as 2025, Moscow had already ceased paying membership fees, following the suspension of its membership. Russia's membership in the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency was suspended in May 2022, which occurred following the...

Russia says its nuclear power plant designs can adapt to construction requirements in seismically active regions
On June 25, Dmitry Ivanov, Chief Engineer of the Atomenergoproekt Integrated Design Institute under the engineering division of Rosatom, stated that Rosatom incorporates seismic requirements into its nuclear power plant designs, enabling relevant units to be constructed and operated in seismically unstable regions. Ivanov noted that Rosatom is currently building or overseeing the construction of nuclear power plants in Russia as well as in India, Bangladesh, Hungary, Egypt, Turkey, and Iran. The seismic impacts faced by different project sites vary, with some regions potentially experiencing higher seismic intensity. Drawing on experience from past projects, the company implements corresponding seismic resistance into nuclear power plant designs in accordance with regulatory document requirements to ensure safe plant operation.
